Case Studies in Statistics
This three-day workshop focuses primarily on working in small groups on case studies with a biological, environmental, or social background. These studies are sourced from open-source literature, websites, or textbooks. They will assist us in formulating a clear research question and a coherent plan for data collection, exploratory analysis, and subsequent statistical evaluation. Finally, each group will deliver a professional presentation to the rest of the class.
This work will help us cover most of the standard methods of statistics, including questions related to sample size, and improve focused and qualitative presentations. Furthermore, it will enhance our collaboration skills in an online environment.
The structure of the workshop “Case Studies in Statistics” is as follows:
Day 1
On the first day, I will provide a quick, intensive refresher on textbook methods in statistics. This part is not compulsory for obtaining a certificate. Those who feel confident in standard statistical methods can skip this day.
We start at 9 am and finish at 4 pm, with a one-hour lunch break around noon and several short breaks throughout the day, totaling five hours of lectures.
Day 2
At the beginning of the second day, I will explain and distribute a number of case studies. We will form groups and establish some rules for interaction. Each group will then work in its breakout room, where you will discuss and share information and ideas. At scheduled times, we will reconvene to interactively discuss progress and difficulties. I will be available for Q&A at all times.
We start at 9 am and finish at 4 pm, with a one-hour lunch break around noon and several short breaks throughout the day, totaling five hours of work.
Day 3
On the third day, we have two options. If participants are willing to share their data and/or problems or ideas, we can split into groups again and work through those problems as we did on day 2. Otherwise, we will repeat the exercise from day 2 with a new set of case studies.
We start at 9 am and finish at 4 pm, with a one-hour lunch break around noon and several short breaks throughout the day, totaling five hours of work.
Note: Beginners can attend the free workshop “Describe and Visualize” in order to refresh some fundamental concepts. All materials of this workshop and of day 1 will be made available to participants. Participants to at least both day 2 and day 3 will receive a participation certificate.
